QC LGU calls for volunteers for bike counting activity

QUEZON CITY (PIA) — The Quezon City (QC) government is gearing up for its 2024 “Bilang Siklista” Bike Counting Activity and is seeking volunteers to enhance data collection on cyclists.

This initiative, in collaboration with the Mobility Awards, aims to gather nationwide comprehensive information to facilitate better urban planning for roads and public infrastructure, ultimately promoting safer and more cyclist-friendly environments.

Led locally by the QC local government’s Department of Public Order and Safety (DPOS)-Green Transport Division, the activity will be accepting volunteers until May 27, 2024. It is now in its fourth year of implementation.

The activity is a vital step towards building a more cyclist-friendly Quezon City. By understanding how, when, and where bicycles are being used, we can tailor our efforts to create safer and more accessible pathways for cyclists,” the QC government said in a statement.

Additionally, the data collected will provide valuable insights into trends and patterns of cycling behavior, enabling policymakers to make informed decisions regarding future urban planning and development initiatives. Moreover, promoting cycling as a mode of transportation not only contributes to reducing carbon emissions but also fosters a healthier lifestyle among residents.

Volunteers for the 2024 Bike Counting Activity will play a crucial role in ensuring the success of the initiative. Their participation will involve assisting in the counting process, recording data, and potentially engaging with cyclists to gather additional insights.

The counting activity will be done manually using paper and pen. It will be conducted in the morning (6:00 am – 8:00 am) and afternoon (4:00 pm – 6:00 pm) from June 24-30, 2024 (a span of 1 week).

Interested individuals can easily sign up to volunteer by filling out the Google Form provided in the Facebook post before the deadline. The participation of volunteers from diverse backgrounds and experiences will enrich the data collection process and contribute to the overall success of the initiative.

This event is being conducted together with a community organization, Mobility Awards, organized by the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities (ICSC), MNL Moves, Climate Reality Project-Philippines, 350.org Pilipinas, and Pinay Bike Commuter to improve conditions for Filipinos who use bicycles as their mode of transport.
