Tax Olympiad, Tax infomercials contests held to inculcate tax consciousness

GOVERNMENT CENTER, PALO, Leyte, March 4 (PIA) -- Believing in the power of the youth, the Bureau of Internal Revenue in Eastern Visayas led by BIR Regional Director Atty. Diosdado R. Mendoza, recently conducted BIR Tax Olympiad and BIR Tax Infomercials contests for college students from various colleges and universities in Eastern Visayas.

“It is the goal of BIR to harness the full potential and creativity of the youth in line with our vision of educating the public towards tax consciousness,” Mendoza said.

The contests, which are part of the BIR 2012 Tax Campaign, were conducted at the various revenue districts of BIR Region 14.

The winners from the various revenue districts competed for the finals at the BIR regional office in the morning of February 24. The contestants went through the rigorous easy, moderate, and difficult questions.

Meanwhile, the finalists for the BIR Tax Infomercials contest showcased their creativity and vision in producing infomercials in the afternoon of February 24.

The BIR hopes that through their infomercials, the students will be able to help in educating the public towards tax consciousness, the BIR director said.

The winning entries will be used as the BIR Region’s official Tax Infomercial in its Tax Campaign for the year 2012, Director Mendoza added.

For the Tax Olympiad, the winners were Jaymar P. Dumagsa of Western Leyte College of Ormoc City, Leyte, as the grand champion; Joan Rachel Pizarra of St. Mary’s College of Catbalogan City, Samar as the first runner up; and Maisie Althea Kesiah Gullan of St. Paul’s School of Business and Law of Pawing, Palo, Leyte as the second runner up.

Meanwhile, for the BIR Tax Infomercial contest, the winners were “Pasasalamat” by Tyrone Bollozos of Leyte Normal University as the grand champion; “BIR Kabalikat Mo” by Paul Neil M. Glova of Leyte Normal University as the first runner up; and “Buwis ang Buhay ng Bayan” by Ariel M. Amante of Leyte Normal University as the second runner up.

The winners were presented their awards during the 2012 Tax Campaign Kick Off on February 28, at the BIR Regional Office. (PIA 8)
