Introducing "Basuraskwela"

CEBU CITY, May 23 (PIA) -- The Cebuano Youth Ambassadors (CYA) and the mothers of Tingub Urban Poor Community introduced its socio-environmental project called "Basuraskwela".

Basuraskwela is taken from two words: Basura and Eskwela. This aims to recycle all used tarpaulins into a creatively customized bags, wallets, and other usable items for sale.

The money they may earn from these products will be used to provide education for at least 50 elementary and high school students this coming June.

Junior Cater International-Cebu, an organization of entrepreneurs and political leaders, is one of the main providers of used tarpaulins.

This project also includes two supplementary activities: Basuraskwela Brigada and Basuraskwela Barkadahay.

Basuraskwela Brigada is a once-a-month activity where volunteers from different universities and organizations conduct a cleaning program in their chosen school as beneficiary.

On the other hand, Basuraskwela Barkadahan is a social interaction promoting Basuraskwela through storytelling with the kids. They target to visit all 80 barangays in Cebu City.

Basuraskwela Barkadahay is supported by the Cebu City Library and the City Nutrition.
