The Department of Agriculture will spend P200 million this year and P300 million in 2014 to encourage more farmers to plant hybrid rice varieties, double the area planted from last year’s 164,787 hectares to 388,000 hectares in 2014, and contribute to attain rice sufficiency by end of 2013. Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala (top photo, left) said the DA will continue to promote private and public hybrids, particularly those developed by the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), during the 1st National Hybrid Rice Congress. He said the DA will also establish more hybrid rice techno-demo farms in major producing provinces in partnership with private seed companies, farmers’ groups and irrigators’ associations (IAs), and local government units (LGUs). PhiRice-developed hybrids could produce up to 12 metric tons (MT) per hectare, more than thrice the country’s average harvest of 3.8 MT per hectare. More than 1,000 farmers, seed producers, foreign rice experts, and local government officials attended the three-day event, keynoted by Professor Yuan Longping, China’s “father of hybrid rice technology.” Also shown at top photo (from left) are DA-Region 3 director Andrew Villacorta, DA assistant secretary and national rice program coordinator Dante Delima, Bureau of Plant Industry director Clarito Barron, Agrarian Reform undersecretaries Rosalina Bistoyong and Atty.
