PhilPost invites young writers in 42nd int’l letter-writing contest

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Aug 4 (PIA) -- The Philippine Postal Corporation (PhilPost), in partnership with the Universal Postal Union, is calling all young writers to participate in the 42nd International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People.

This is with the 2013 theme, “Why Water is a Precious Resource.”

The announcement was made by Cecilia Cotapte, information officer of the PhilPost Central Mindanao Area 8, during the Regional Association of Government Communicators meeting held yesterday, August 3, at the Philippine Information Agency-10 conference room.

Cotapte said young people up to the age of 15 years may take part in the competition by writing a letter explaining the importance of water.

She said the composition, with a maximum of 800 words, must be in English, typewritten and must take the form of a letter that contains the following elements: place and date, addressee, opening and closing salutation, and signature.

Aside from the composition, participants should also indicate in a separate sheet of paper his/her complete name, gender, age, date of birth, home address, contact numbers, name and address of school, grade or year level, as well as, the number of words of the letter composition and must attach a 2 x 2 colored photo.

According to her, entries must be submitted via postal mail only to Office of the Assistance Postmaster General for Operations, c/o Jocelyn E. Cacho-Special Project Officer, 3/F Philippine Postal Corporation, Liwasang Bonifacio, 1000 Manila, not later than October 9, 2012.

The composition will be judged based on relevance to the theme (30 percent), imagination and originality of the contents (20 percent), demonstration of a good writing style (20 percent), demonstration of an extensive vocabulary (20 percent) and youthfulness of tone (10 percent).

The first prize winner will win P15,000 and his/her composition will be sent by the PhilPost to the International Bureau as the country’s official entry to the said international competition.

The second and third prize winners, on the other hand, will receive P10,000 and P5,000 each, respectively. Medals, plaque and stamp albums will also be given to the top three winners. (APB/PIA-10)
