OROQUIETA CITY, Misamis Occidental, Sept. 1 (PIA) -- A total of 4,567 college scholarships were granted to qualified beneficiaries in Northern Mindanao through the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), region 10, for school-year 2011-2012.

Of this figure, 1,444 or 31.61 percent were granted under the CHED Traditional Scholarship Grants (TSG) while 3,123 or 68.38 percent were granted under the Special Study Grant Program for Congressional Districts (SSGP-CD).

In turn, 447 or 30.95 percent of the CHED-TSG were new, while 997 or 69.05 percent were on-going, Dr. Zenaida G. Gersana, regional director of CHED, Region 10, said.

Gersana said the most number of scholars under the CHED-TSG were those on full merit with 393 or 27.21 percent, followed by the half-merit with 390 or 27 percent.

Next was the Study Now, Pay Later Plan (SNLP) with 313 or 21.67 percent, “Tulong-Dunong” or grants-in-aid with 291 or 20.15 percent and the Department of National Defense (DND)-CHED-PASUC-SGP, 21 or 1.45 percent.

The other 36 slots or 2.49 percent were composed of the following: regional scholarships, nine, national scholarships, seven, Senate Study Grant (SSG) of senators Pimentel and Legarda, as well, as the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPPAP)- SGP, four slots, each.

CHED-HEDP, three, SSG of Sen. Pangilinan, two, and SSG of senators Lapid and Estrada and Bright Muslim Mindanaoan, one each.

Meanwhile, CHED-10 also handled the SSGP-CD of Lanao del Sur, which is under the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARRM).

This was because of its proximity to Cagayan de Oro City, where the CHED-10 regional office is based, Gersana said.

Of these, 1,265 or 40.50 percent were new, while 1,858 or 59.50 percent were on-going.

These new SSGP-CD slots were sourced from the Congressional Funds of Bukidnon District 1, with 765 or 60.47 percent, and Misamis Occidental District 2, with 365 or 28.85 percent.

Likewise, 15 scholarship slots or 1.18 percent, each, of the new SSGP-CD were funded by the Bukidnon District 2, Bukidnon District 3, Misamis Oriental District 1, Misamis Oriental District 2, Cagayan de Oro District 1, Cagayan de Oro District 2, and the lone districts of Camiguin and Iligan City.

Of the non-going SSGP-CD scholarships, the highest was from Misamis Oriental District 2 with 670 or 21.45 percent, followed by Cagayan de Oro District 2 with 413 or 13.22 percent, Camiguin Lone District, 145 or 4.64 percent and Misamis Occidental District 1 and District 2, with 120 or 3.84 percent, each.

The other districts had this number of on-going scholarships: 45 or 2.42 percent, each, from Bukidnon Districts 1, 2 and 3, Misamis Oriental District 1, Cagayan de Oro District 2, Lone District of Iligan City, Lanao del Norte District 2 and Lanao del Sur District 2.

With 15 on-going scholarship slots were Lanao del Norte District 1 and Lanao del Sur District 1, Gersana added. (RCA/-IA10, Misamis Occidental)
