BORONGAN CITY, Eastern Samar, May 21 (PIA) -- An influx of engineering enrollees has flocked Eastern Samar State University (ESSU) after one of its graduates made it to the top 10 of the recent civil engineering examinations.

Engr. Grace Manlapas, head of ESSU said, after Engr. Vincent Tegio placed tenth in the civil engineering examinations, more students enrolled in the university.

ESSU used to fill a class with 40 students but last Friday, they decided to increase it to 60 per class to accommodate more applicants. In just five days, they have completed two full sections of Engineering freshmen. Next week, ESSU is still expecting more enrollees to come, but they have to inquire if they can still open a class, considering a very “lean but mean” Engineering teaching staff, said Engr. Leo Cardenas, Head of Engineering and Technology Department of ESSU, in a text message.

“Tegio could have contributed to the increase of our enrollees, because according to them, they are becoming more confident in their chosen course and in the institution they are in,” Manlapas said.

When interviewed, 10th placer Vincent said he did not expect to pass, much less become a placer because he was expecting fewer items in the exams; as it was, he was surprised that there were 300 instead of the usual 80 items to answer.

Today, he tells his colleagues who did not pass the exams not to give up and instead keep on studying and praying.

As the enrollment process is on-going at ESSU, Dr. Manlapas said they continue to screen. “It has always been a policy to admit applicants with 83 to 85 percent general average. If not, we check his Mathematics and Science subjects, and when these two promising grades, we consider.

Eight civil engineers man the Engineering Department of ESSU: led by Engr. Leovigildo Cardenas, Ph.D., the College Dean while Engr. Grace O. Manlapas heads the Engineering and Trade Technology Department. Dr. Rey Lombrio is the University President.

Engr. Arvin Pomarejos, Engr. Felix John Bianes and Engr. Michael Jul Amboy join Engr. Vincent’s court of new Civil Engineers from ESSU. One Engr. Bebiano Cada completes the list of five. Grace mentioned that Cada, like Tegio is thankful also to the Lord, because, due to financial constraints, he just went on self-review, but made it just as well. (GTT/AFN-PIA 8, Eastern Samar)
