TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte, July 6 (PIA) -- The National Nutrition Month 2012 this July carries the theme “Pagkain ng gulay ugaliin, araw-araw itong ihain." The theme of this year’s National Nutrition Month focuses on calling attention to the public on the importance of eating vegetable for its nutrition

In Eastern Visayas, the launching of the nutrition month was held at the Pawing Elementary School, Palo town, Leyte province, last July 2 as said school and its students has many good nutrition practices and the town known for its well-maintained vegetables gardens.

Carina Santiago, National Nutrition Council regional coordinator was joined by heads of government agencies, media partner, parents and vegetable growers during the launching of the nutrition month.

Vegetable planting and consumption was the main focus of the launching as vegetables have high nutrition values and vegetable production can be done on one’s backyard.

Children can easily be taught on the value of eating vegetable which they produce on their backyards.

Government officials spoke on the value of eating vegetables for good skin and good performance in school and in work.

The annual celebration of nutrition month is led by the NNC, an attached agency of the Department of Health. Nutrition month is celebrated every month of July per Presidential Degree Number 491 or the Nutrition Act of the Philippines promulgated on June 24, 1974 which also created the National Nutrition Council as the agency tasked with the policy making and coordination in undertaking good nutrition.
