Pantawid Pamilya grantees get scholarship grants

SAN JOSE, Antique, June 6 (PIA) –- Children of Pantawid Pamilya beneficiaries are set to avail of college scholarship grants from the national government as part of the continuing support of the administration to uplift the disadvantaged sectors.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development launched this year the ‘Student’s Grants Aid’ program for poverty alleviation aimed at providing scholarship grant to poor but deserving students.

Jeffrey Gabucay, Pantawid Pamilya provincial coordinator in Antique said the province was given 42 slots for scholars to come from the towns of Bugasong, Caluya, Culasi, Hamtic, Laua-an, Patnongon and San Remigio.

Each town according to Gabucay will be given six slots, however, they still need to submit 10 applicants so that in case any of the first six fails to meet the criteria, any of the four can take the slot. The list is already submitted to the central office of DSWD.

Each scholar will get P60,000 per year or P30,000 each semester intended for tuition fee, book allowance, board and lodging, uniform and any expenses that may arise during the period.

The only school accredited for this scholarship Gabucay said is Western Visayas State University, a tertiary school run by the government in Iloilo City.

These are among the courses that the scholars can choose from; Bachelor in Elementary and Secondary Education, Bachelor of Science in Information Technology and Information Management, Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics, Agriculture and Forestry and Bachelor of Arts in English, explained Gabucay.

Gabucay added that when the scholar performs well and graduates in the said courses, they will have a guaranteed employment.

“This is how sincere the government in providing opportunities for the underprivileged sectors to get out of poverty,” said Gabucay.

Thus, Gabucay urged parents to support their children, likewise challenged the scholars to put priority in their studies. (MLG/PSM/PIA6 Antique)
