Benguet hosts national volleyball tilt

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet, May 17 (PIA) -- The province of Benguet is hosting the on-going 2012 National Intercollegiate Volleyball Championship.

The volleyball event being held at the Benguet State University and Cordillera Career Development College gymnasiums, are attended by at least 24 teams coming from different colleges and universities from the National Capital Region and Baguio City.

University Athletic Association of the Philippines champion De La Salle University is out to defend their title in the men and women’s division in the national volleyball tilt. Local teams composed of the Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League bets- University of Baguio, Saint Louis University, and the University of the Cordilleras, are also vying for the title.

The Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF) which organized the event, has undertaken the responsibility of hosting the event every year. The Federation aims to promote and develop the sport of volleyball at the grassroot level. It intends to bring the game closer to the younger crowd that would secure its status tomorrow. It also provides a venue for the identification of potential volleyball players for the National Youth Volleyball Team.

The event, which started on Monday, May 14, will run for a week until Saturday, May 19, where the emerging finalists will battle it out for the championship crown.

Meanwhile, Mary Joy Baron from Baguio City, is a player to watch out for. Fresh from the Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association Meet and the recent Palarong Pambansa 2012, Baron is set to play with the defending champions after being drafted by the DLSU after graduating high school at the Baguio City National High School.( RC- PIA CAR)
