TABUK CITY, Kalinga, April 26 (PIA) -- The provincial nursery station under the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAG) is expected to be upgraded after it was included in the areas of work under the Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES), this summer.

OPAG Officer-in-Charge Domingo Bakilan said most of the 90 SPES workers hired by the provincial government are assigned to do rehabilitation work of the provincial nursery as part of OPAG’s upscaling of facilities. Works to be done include fixing of the greenhouse and seedling propagation lots, and installation of rain shelters.

Bakilan said that the 20-day summer work by SPES students is enough to rehabilitate the facility to also improve services to farmer-beneficiaries.

According to Bakilan, OPAG aims to produce quality seedlings for distribution to farmers as it has been proven through studies that good production starts from quality seedlings.

The office propagates at its provincial nursery seedlings of trees for reforestation purposes and other high-value crops for distribution by farmers, in time for the coming planting season.

Some of the SPES workers hired by the province are assigned at the Environment and Natural Resources Office of the provincial government to assist in the greening project, Bakilan said.(JDP/LL-PIA CAR, Kalinga)
