DOST to give Ovicidal traps to Aklan schools
KALIBO, Aklan, June 20 (PIA6) -- Public and private elementary and high schools in Aklan are set to receive Ovicidal trap kits from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to help prevent or stop dengue-carrying mosquitoes from infecting pupils and students.
According to Jairus Lachica, Provincial Head of DOST-Aklan, Aklan schools may have their respective Ovi traps in July, with each classroom getting two sets each.
This move by the DOST follows what they had started last year in Aklan when they also distributed Ovi traps to two barangays in Kalibo and three barangays in Boracay Island.
Last year, Lachica said these areas were identified to have the highest number of dengue cases in Aklan.
This year, they will be saturating schools with Ovi traps to ensure that dengue cases in Aklan will no longer escalate, noting that presently, all municipalities have listed cases already, unlike last year when there were municipalities with zero cases.
Throughout Western Visayas within this period, some 4,000 public elementary and high schools with about 44,000 classrooms are set to receive Ovicidal trap kits.
Based on the latest data of the PHO here, the province has listed a total number of 179 dengue cases from January to June 9 of this year. (JCM/VGV PIA 6 Aklan)
