LEGAZPI CITY, February 16 (PIA) – The city government, under the leadership of Mayor Carmen Geraldine B. Rosal, here spearheaded the V-Day march promoting an environmental and reforestation campaign to address and further prevent flooding concerns during rainy seasons.
At least a thousand participants from different sectors of society, including government employees, civic organizations, academe, students, non government organizations, police and military officers and personnel, city and barangay officials, among others, joined the 6th annual Lakad at Tanim para sa Puso last February 14.
Participants joined the brisk walks from Peñaranda Park in Old Albay District in this city up to the top of Ligñon Hill view deck where the tree planting activity was conducted.
Rosal cited the support and cooperation of the participants for joining and giving importance to the call of the city government, further encouraged all the Legazpeños to regularly participate in the environmental program of the city.
On the other hand, City Administrator Noel E. Rosal averred that this environmental activity started after typhoons Milenyo and Reming in September and November 2006, respectively, devastated the cityscape.
He also said that this activity intended to protect the environment will also be beneficial to future generations and be aware that planting trees today will enable us to to preserve our natural resources for a better tomorrow.
Meanwhile, city Councilor Celoy Chan reported that almost 3,000 trees from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) given to the city government were planted at Ligñon hill during Valentine’s day. (MAL/MPS, LGU Legazpi City)
