GENERAL TRIAS, Cavite, Sept 6 (PIA) -- All 33 barangay captains, including several members of their respective councils, attended the recent Barangay Legal Education Seminar (BLES) conducted by the University of the Philippines (UP) Law Center (Training and Convention Division).

The said seminar, which was held at the municipal town hall, aimed to enhance the understanding of law for barangay officials so they can effectively handle their sworn commitment to the community.

The local government of this first-class municipality, headed by Mayor Luis “Jon-Jon” Ferrer IV, supported this program initiated by the UP Law Center and urged the latter to conduct a similar program in other cities and municipalities in the province.

Barangay captains and councilors who attended the seminar enhanced their knowledge about legal responsibilities in the barangay level among which were barangay justice system, eradication of the use and abuse of illegal drugs, protection of the rights and welfare of women and children, actions for the recovery of property, and the role of the Philippine National Police in society.

Barangay leaders play a vital role in the society. Aside from keeping their respective community safe and orderly, this is the venue where immediate solutions involving legal issues are resolved by the committee members (Lupon ng mga barangay) brought before them by the local residents.

Aside from Mayor Ferrer IV, those who attended and gave their support for the seminar workshop were: Cavite Sixth District Representative Antonio A. Ferrer, Police Cavite PNP Provincial Director Senior Superintendent John C. Bulalacao, and Professor Eduardo A. Labitag; Project Director, BLES and POPLAW Seminar, Training and Convention Division of the UP Law Center. (RF-PIA 2A, Cavite/General Trias PIO – Local Communications Group)
