Marikina mayor reminds residents to be cautious of leptospirosis

MARIKINA, August 14 (PIA) -- Marikina Mayor Del De Guzman has reminded residents to be cautious of the dreaded leptospirosis.

“For people who had contact with flood waters and experiencing fever and body aches, the city government advises to immediately visit the nearest health center in your barangay or the City Health Office,” said de Guzman.

Leptospirosis is a disease caused by the leptospira bacteria found in flood waters contaminated by animal urine which usually comes from rats. The said bacteria enters the human body through open wounds like cuts or abrasions on the skin, as well as mucous membranes of the mouth, nose and eyes.

In the early stages of the disease, symptoms include high fever, severe headache, muscle pain, chills, redness of the eyes, abdominal pain, jaundice, hemorrhages in the skin and mucous membranes, vomiting, diarrhea, and rashes.

Severe cases of leptospirosis may lead to liver failure, kidney failure, or meningitis. According to the data of the Department of Health, 2,002 leptospirosis cases were reported nationwide from January 1 to July 7, 2012 with 97 deaths.

“Early detection and treatment is advised to fight the said disease. Immediately consult your doctor if the said symptoms are already present in two days of illness,” de Guzman added.

Meanwhile, de Guzman also advised residents to avoid swimming in potentially contaminated flood waters or wear protective clothing like boots and gloves. Also, controlling rats through traps and poisons as well as observing cleanliness at home can help prevent the disease. (MARIKINA-PIO/RJB/JEG/PIA-NCR)
