Las Piñas Mayor calls for sustained proper garbage disposal
LAS PIÑAS CITY, July 31 (PIA) -- Las Piñas Mayor Vergel Aguilar has urged residents to continue practicing proper garbage segregation and disposal.
Aguilar has noted a significant drop in the volume of solid wastes collected from households and in commercial areas in the last three months.
In a statement, Aguilar said there is about 37 percent decrease of garbage volume collected by the city environmental sanitation office from households in 20 barangays, public markets and talipapa, as well as in all commercial center areas in Las Piñas.
“If we continue the practice (of proper garbage segregation and disposal), we are soon to meet our goal of 70 percent solid waste reduction in the next five years,” Aguilar said.
The city's 60 compactor trucks make an average of 105 trips per day to collect solid wastes from households, 50 talipapa and wet markets, and 15 public markets.
The city environmental sanitation office has noted about a 4 percent decline in plastic and Styrofoam materials found from the trash collected.
With this, Aguilar underscored the importance of an orderly and clean environment to save life and Mother Earth.
The local chief executive also renewed his call for minimal use of plastic or Styrofoam as food packaging and carry-out bag in accordance with the city’s "Plastic Bag Regulation Ordinance."
Under said ordinance, commercial establishments are prohibited from the use and sale of said materials, and violators will be meted with penalty ranging from P1,000 up to P5,000 for various offenses, and imprisonment of not more than six months, and will even face cancellation of license to operate.
Aguilar reiterated his order for continuous monitoring of "no-plastic police" and the conduct of values formation campaign on the benefits of waste reduction and recycling. (LAS PIÑAS-PIO/RJB/JEG/PIA-NCR)
