Maynilad completes new facility in QC

QUEZON CITY, June 12 (PIA) -- The Maynilad Water Services, Inc. recently completed its P25 million sewage treatment plant (STP) located along Congressional Avenue in Quezon City.

Maynilad President and CEO Ricky P. Vargas said wastewater management plays an important role in protecting the health and sanitation of communities and the environment.

“This is why we continue to accelerate our projects for the proper treatment and disposal of wastewater in our concession area. This is the commitment of Maynilad,” said Vargas.

According to Maynilad, the newly-constructed STP can serve up to 4,400 people in Barangay Bahay Toro, Quezon City and can also help clear the San Juan river basin.

Through the use of a technology called “Sequencing Batch Reactor” (SBR), Maynilad was able to build the new sewage treatment plant within a confined space.

Maynilad adopted the use of SBR for the new treatment plant due to the limited space located in a densely populated area.

SBR provides a high degree of coliform and biological nutrient removal that helps ensure that water emptying into the Culiat creek follows environmental standards set by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

Maynilad has allotted P2.7 billion for 2012 to boost its sewerage and sanitation drive. It also aims to construct a total of 14 sewerage treatment plants in the San Juan river basin area in 2013 and five more in the West Zone areas by 2016.

Meanwhile, the World Bank recently extended a $275-million loan to the Land Bank of the Philippines to finance sewerage projects under the Metro Manila Wastewater Management Project.

Maynilad added that it will tap the loan to partially fund the construction and rehabilitation of STPs and conveyance systems in Pasay, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela and Quezon City, as well as the construction of a septage treatment in the southern part of its concession. (MAYNILAD/RJB/JEG-PIA-NCR)
