Jingle contest highlights local veggies
TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, July 30 (PIA) -- Philippine vegetables took the center stage as 14 schools in this city competed for the best jingle composition on nutrition.
Dr. James Guzman, city health officer, said the activity is part of the Nutrition month celebration in the city under the theme, “Pagkain Ng Gulay Ugaliin, Araw-Araw Nating Itong Ihain.”
Elementary and secondary schools, both private and public, submitted jingles emphasizing the importance of vegetables in the diet of growing children.
Under the Philippine scenario, studies show that Filipino children seldom include vegetables in their diet as a possible effect of media promotions in favor of multinational food chains.
The National Nutrition Commission said this year’s theme is timely as it is important for the children to recognize the importance of vegetables in their growing years.
Beatriz Pagulayan, education supervisor of the City Division of Tuguegarao, identified the winners in the elementary level: Tuguegarao East Central School for the first prize; Tuguegarao West Central School placed second, and Northeast Central School as third.
For the secondary level, Cagayan National High School got the first place, Linao National High School placed second, and Tuguegarao Science High School placed third.
Meanwhile, a "kalesa"-painting competition has been scheduled today for secondary students, where the local horse-drawn rigs are expected to carry "vegetable messages" as part of the advocacy campaign of the city. (BSY-PIA 2, Cagayan)
