Tricycles now banned in Baguio City
BAGUIO CITY, July 30 (PIA) -- Tricycles are now banned here after the city council has approved on final reading Ordinance No. 28, series of 2012, “Banning all tricycles within the territorial boundaries,” of the city due to their unsuitability as a mode of transportation in the area.
Councilor Philian Weygan-Allan, author of the measure, said tricycles have begun to proliferate in parts of the city when individuals and businessmen running water deliveries, junk shops, deliveries of liquefied petroleum gas, ice cream and general merchandise operated their own tricycles .
“The presence of these tricycles recently created traffic problems instead of decongesting especially in Marcos Highway, Bakakeng Central, Camp 7, Kennon Road, Legarda Road, and other roads of Baguio City,” Weygan said.
She said the Baguio City Police Office recommended the total prohibition on tricycles, for apart from being unfit to the terrain of the city, tricycles impede traffic flow along roads especially on ascending portions.
The city police also said that motorcycles being converted into tricycles were originally manufactured or engineered as single motor vehicles and not as a tricycle, and that this is likely to cause road safety issues because of the introduced modifications.
As approved, violators will be fined from P500 to P3,000, or will face imprisonment of 30 to 60 days. (PIA CAR/ Aileen Refuerzo-Baguio City PIO)
