DepEd Kalinga urges more schools to vie for Gulayan Sa Paaralan awards
TABUK CITY, Kalinga, June 20 (PIA)-- A local education official here is calling on more schools to participate in the search for the Most Outstanding Gulayan sa Paaralan in the region.
Kalinga Schools Division Superintendent Norma Brillantes is encouraging schools in the province to vie for the top award in this year’s competition after topping the plot gardening category in 2011 for the same competition.
The search has two categories namely; plot gardening category and container gardening category. Under the plot gardening category elementary level, Bulo West Elementary School of Tabuk City bagged the first best implementer while Tuga National High School, Tabuk City bagged it for the secondary level.
Both schools of Tabuk City she said brought home P60,000.00 each and gardening tools as rewards from the Department of Agriculture (DA) which spearheaded said project.
The Western Tabuk Central School also won second place in the plot category with P40,000.00 reward. Agbannawag Elementary School and the Rizal National School of Arts and Trade were also among the finalist during the regional competition.
According to Brillantes, participating schools should give more effort for the 2012 search considering that Kalinga will now be competing with all the other provinces in the region unlike last year where only Kalinga and Mountain Province were selected to pilot the search.
She advised that schools to make their gardens more beautiful and productive especially that Benguet which is known as a vegetable producing province will now be joining in the contest.
“During the monitoring, we are happy to see our schools actively participating especially that all their gardens are very productive and have contributed much in beautifying the schools,” Brililiantes noted.
She explained that Gulayan project does not only encourage schools to improve their surroundings but aimed specially in teaching children to value and appreciate the planting and consumption of vegetables.
This she said not only intends to help address the scarcity of food among the people but also intends to curb malnutrition among school children. (JDP/GGD- PIA CAR, Kalinga)
