NIA plants 2,000 trees on world environment month
TABUK CITY, Kalinga, June 6 (PIA) -- Employees of the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) and irrigators associations this province will plant around 2,000 assorted seedlings in celebration of the World Environment Month on June 8.
Engr. Richard Lemi of the Kalinga Provincial Irrigation Management Office said various forest tree and fruit-bearing seedlings will be planted in three locations in Tinglayan, Lubuagan, Pinukpuk, and at the Sports Complex grounds, this city.
Fruit-bearing trees include coffee and cacao, and forest species like mahogany, narra, sagat, and other common species. He said they have mobilized members of the irrigators associations in those areas to participate during the synchronized tree planting.
OIC Provincial Agriculturist Engr. Domingo Bakilan confirmed during the regular Kapihan, June 6, Monday the availability of 1,000 coffee seedlings provided by the Cordillera regional office of the Department of Agriculture.
Lemi also bared that they will also join other government agencies and civil societies during the June 25 Arbor Day, another tree-planting day in celebration of the Environment Month.
“NIA conducts tree planting not only for the sake of celebrations but is its mandate to protect forest shed areas to maintain underground water deposits for irrigation systems,” he said. (JDP/PAB-PIA CAR,Kalinga)
