Canoe Racing in Madgao River opened Eco-Tourism Month celeb

ASUNCION, Davao Del Norte, June 27 (PIA) -- A festive annual Canoe Racing in Madgao River in Barangay Sagayan, in the town of Asuncion, Davao del Norte on June 21 launched the Eco-Tourism Month celebration.

The occasion, with the theme, “It’s more fun boating in Magdao,” includes other activities such as river clean-up drives, clearing of planted trees and bamboo growing along Magdao river bank.

The Canoe Racing was first held on 2005 and then in 2011.

Many supporters got to watch the whole competition this year on either side of the river. Some spectators cheered from the Sagayen Bridge. Various games in different categories were held in this year’s race such as singles for men and women, doubles for women and bamboo raft race or also known as “lumba sa kawayan nga gakit.”

Asuncion takes pride of its Madgao River, which was launched among the prime tourist destinations of the province. It is home to marine resources such as Carp and tilapia. A fresh water prawn called “uwang” can also be found here.

Through the Municipal Tourism Office, Asuncion mayor Joseph Nilo Parreñas projected the Madgao River to be comparable as the river cruise in Loboc, Bohol. With the support of governor Rodolfo P. del Rosario’s program called “Ugmad Komunidad,” necessary actions are now ready to develop this area.

Present in this significant event were SB Chair Tourism Junie Mae Miranda, Brgy. Capt. Eduardo Fullante, Asst. Provincial Administrator Romulo Tagalo, Provincial Tourism Officer Noel Daquioag, and Municipal Tourism Officer Servando Lawas.(Ladenice C. Tolibas/DavNor PIO)
