Brgy. Una Boxing team reigns supreme in Phl national games
TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte, June 8 (PIA) -- The Davao del Norte Barangay Una Boxing Team founded by ANFLOCOR Group of Companies' Tonyboy Floirendo was once again victorious during the recently concluded 2012 Philippine Olympic Committee-Philippine Sports Commission (POC-PSC) Philippine National Games Boxing Tournament held at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila last May 24 to 31, this year.
The team amassed a total of four golds and one silver medal besting other elite athletes all over the archipelago.
The Davao del Norte Barangay Una Boxing Team is also actively supported by 2nd District Rep. Anton F. Lagdameo, Jr.
Leading the winning team was light welterweight successive national champion Jay-ar Inson who trounced April Olaybar Lagsit of Sorsogon via a Referee Stop Contest Decision.
Palaro stand-out Quirino Mellejor, meanwhile, outclassed Jeson Umbal of Camiguin Province in their Bantamweight championship duel, winning another gold for the Panabo-based squad.
Both Inson and Mellejor are graduating students of the University of Mindanao-Panabo College under the Barangay Una Boxing Scholarship Program.
Equally impressive in their ring heroics were Welander Hersalia and Joey Canoy who defeated their respective foes in the Welterweight and Pinweight division of the tourney, winning two additional gold medals for the team.
Lightweight contender Resty Apas managed to hook a silver medal after he was out-boxed by James Palicte representing Bago City, Negros Occidental.
The Barangay Una Boxing Team which flew to Manila was led by Rep. Lagdameo’s Chief of Staff and Team Manager Gene-rose Tecson together with Program Director Edwin Pardillo, who is also the ABAP President of Davao del Norte.
Team Coaches Jonas Jerusalem and A2C Rico Laput, a guest trainor from the Philippine Air Force also lend support as the Team competed with the best amateurs in the country.
During the awarding ceremony, the presence of former Barangay Una Boxing Team stalwarts and current Philippine team mainstays Mark Anthony Barriga and Charly Suarez complimented the joyous event. (Office of the 2nd Congressional District-DavNor/Edwin C. Lagumbay Jr.)
