PWDs shine in skills tilt, talent show
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Aug. 3 (PIA) -- No one can stop them from shining despite their physical deformities.
Persons with disabilities (PWDs) exhibited their skills and talents in the Skills Competition and Talent Show during the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week celebration.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development-9, through its Area Vocational Rehabilitation Center–3 (AVRC) in Brgy. Mampang, conducted the contest to motivate PWDs and apply theories learned from the courses offered by the center.
The skills competition included assembly of light garments, slipper making, fantasy make-up, sitting position massage, grafting, and poster making.
Cynthia Julian, training section supervisor of AVRC–3, said the event is a localized version of the national skills competition.
She added that it’s their way in boosting the morale of PWDs.
In the afternoon, the “PWDs Got Talent” was conducted as a talent showdown among PWDs in the center. AVRC-3 staff also participated by rendering special numbers.
This competition is part of DSWD’s thrusts to increase public awareness on issues involving PWDs and to make them socially competitive.
The week-long celebration has been mandated through Proclamation no. 1870 in 1979 and amended by Proclamation no. 361 in 2000 and Administrative Order no. 35 in 2002. (JPA/EL/WMSU-OJT-DSWD/PIA9-ZBST)
