ZAMBOANGA CITY, July 31 (PIA) -- To be truthful is the way to survival, longevity and sustainability of press freedom.

This was emphasized by Secretary Herminio “Sonny” Coloma Jr., of the Presidential Communication Operations Office (PCOO), as he inspired the Zamboanga press to choose to write for the good of the country.

Coloma was keynote speaker and inducting officer during the 31st Annual Induction ceremonies of the Zamboanga City Press Club, Inc.

“To be effective writers, we must feel deeply and believe strongly about what we are writing about,” as he shared three vital percepts of a writer: one as “to write is already to choose;” second “writing is a talent and a gift that must be used responsibly;” and “the pen is mightier than the sword.”

The secretary said that it would be ideal if the press people would choose to write something for the good of the country. “Perhaps, it is best that we ask ourselves now: What do we feel and believe about President Aquino and our government? What is it about our leader and country that we can write about with passion and commitment?” Coloma challenged.

Whether you acknowledge it openly or not, your ability to write is a God-given talent. Therefore, this gift is both a blessing and a grace, he said.

The local press in attendance listened as Coloma said that the making of a writer requires the exercise of certain virtues like patience, perseverance and determination.

Therefore, let us make full use of our God-given talents in the service of our fellow Filipinos...Writers hold tremendous power in their hands, as writers and professional journalists or broadcasters, we hold tremendous power: the power to inform, the power to educate, the power to convince, the power to mobilize people into action, the power to encourage people to actualize their fullest potentials,” he pointed out.

Coloma’s visit to the city was facilitated by House Deputy Speaker and 1st District Rep. Beng Climaco. (JPA/PIA9-ZBST)
