27 private schools in EV not given permit to operate

TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte, May 31 (PIA) -- Private owners of at least 27 schools ordered closed by the Department of Education in Eastern Visayas must have now realized that government is serious in its effort to attain quality education for all.

DepEd-8 cited failure to secure government permit as the reason for the 27 privately-owned schools to be inoperable this coming school year.

The education department disclosed that as of May 18 the schools without permit are located in different provinces in the region.

Joel Zartiga, DepEd quality assurance and accountability (QAA) division specialist bared that the 27 schools of pre-elementary, elementary, and high school levels were unable to come up with detailed feasibility study to justify the operation of the business.

It was learned that the closure order of DepEd was based on submitted documents which showed that the 27 schools failed to improve curriculum, classroom and teachers program, and requirement plan for teachers to mention some.

The education department is discouraging parents to enroll their children in schools not accredited by DepEd to avoid complications. DepEd has full charge of the basic education for both elementary and secondary public schools and supervisory powers over private schools which ensures of private schools compliance with government standards. At present, 421 privately-owned schools were allowed by DepEd to operate this school year which starts on June 4, 2012. (EOPT/AJC-PIA 8)
