TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte, May 27 (PIA) -- The World Environmental Day celebration on June 5 will put on center stage the green economy aimed to secure renewed political commitment for sustainable development, assess the progress to date in the implementation of the outcomes of the major summits on sustainable development, and address new and emerging challenges.

The Environmental Management Bureau in Eastern Visayas released the information stressing that focus of the celebration will be on the institutional framework for sustainable development in the 10 sectors which include buildings, fisheries, forestry, transport, water, agriculture, energy supply, tourism, waste, and manufacturing and industry.

Maribel Munsayac, EMB-8 information chief explained that, “green economy refers to improving human livelihood while taking into consideration environmental impacts and the shift towards a Green Economy that begins at the individual level, scaling up to macroeconomic and global levels.”

Global population, which is projected to exceed nine billion by year 2050 is expected to lead to a high demand for natural resources and with demand far outstripping supply, world resources is seen to be exploited unsustainably which might lead to dire environmental degradation.

The EMB-8 and the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources will undertake a series of activities to mark the worldwide celebration.
