CARIGARA, Leyte, Dec 30 (PIA) -- The Second Leyte Engineering District (2nd LED) is set to undertake a P68-million worth of projects in 2013 to facilitate the opening of the long-awaited for Burauen-Albuera Road.

A P50 million funding will cover the road opening and pavement of two-kilometer(km) road section and construction of Lobi Bridge while the remaining P18 million is intended for building the 30-meter Balagnon Bridge said Ma. Margarita C. Junia, district engineer.

“If these entire projects will be completed next year, the Burauen side of the road will be opened to traffic,” Junia said.

The national government has already poured in P244 million for this road project. So far, only 2.17 km of the road is still unopened in the Burauen side and about 6.26 km of the road project have yet to be completed in the Albuera side under the Fourth Leyte Engineening District.

The first phase and second phase of the 12-km new road was completed in May of 2010 and April of 2011, respectively. The third phase of the road opening is almost complete, Junia said.

The 36.22 km-road opening project started in 2008. It traverses some rebel-infested villages along the border of northern and western Leyte.

Currently, 14.25 km of the road section is concrete, 10.06 km are gravel, 48 meters of bridges have been completed while more than 8 km remain unopened.

With the current route or road network, motorists coming from the regional capital have to pass through eight towns to get to Ormoc City traveling a distance of 107 km.

In the new road, travelers will reach Ormoc City from Tacloban City by passing through only five towns with a combined road length of 89 km.

Aside from shortened travel time, when opened, the new road will facilitate easier transport of farm produce to the business district of the province by people in the upland areas.

With enhanced accessibility, the new road is seen to improve the peace and order and the economic situation of the people. (PIA 8)
