DUMAGUETE CITY, July 2 (PIA) -- A professor of the Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) is one of the 12 presenters from the Philippines who will speak during an annual media conference in Malaysia this month.

Prof. Joy G. Perez, a journalism and communications teacher and public information officer of the only state university in Negros Oriental, was chosen as one of the 200 presenters during the 21st Asian Media and Information and Communication Centre Ltd. (AMIC) annual conference on July 11 to 14, 2012 at Shah Alam, Malaysia.

Of the 12 presenters from the Philippines, Perez is the only one from Visayas. One is from Ateneo de Cagayan, and the rest are from Luzon, specifically from the University of the Philippines-Los Banos and Diliman, Ateneo De Manila University and Miriam College.

Perez will present her research paper titled “Impact on the Internet Use Among Community Newspaper Journalists in the Philippines: Community Technology Model.”

She said her presentation is based on the results of a study she conducted from mid-July 2011 to February 2012 to determine the impact of 20 Internet applications on at least 180 journalist respondents nationwide.

One of the key results of her study that she will present during the four-day conference is the top Internet applications used by Filipino journalists.

“E-mail came out as the most extensively used from among the 20 Internet applications listed, followed by search engines, and Facebook,” Perez said.

Perez will also present a communication technology model called the “I-LIKE Model” which she developed to provide a framework to guide journalists in their internet usage as a medium to gather information and new ideas pertaining to their journalistic career.

This year’s AMIC conference, which also marks its 40th anniversary, is expected to gather over 300 local and international delegates, with the theme: “Forty Years of Media and Communication in Asia: Retrospect, Introspect and Prospects."

Top caliber speakers from the academe, journalism and broadcasting professions, media industries, government, non-government and private institutions will engage the participants in plenaries and discussions.

The annual gathering seeks to address the problems and prospects that emerge from new global developments for media practitioners and academics who will provide retrospective and introspective views on Asian media and communication. (RMN-PIA7 Negros Oriental)
