TAYUM, Abra, Aug 17 (PIA) -- The governor ordered the provincial engineer’s office (PEO) to repair the box culvert of the irrigation system of the Abra River Irrigators’ Association (ARIA) damaged by typhoon Gener last month.

Governor Eustaquio P. Bersamin directed engineers Paterno Bernal of the PEO, Hector Camcam and Brendo Tejero of Tayum local government unit, and the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer (PDRRMO), to work together to prepare the program of work needed in the repair of the damaged box culverts.

While the ARIA is not government-owned, Bersamin is determined to undertake the repair of the damaged irrigation structure because this is servicing approximately 1,000 hectares of farmlands in Tayum, Bangued and Pidigan. If not repaired immediately, the palay production is at stake this cropping season.

The governor assured his financial support to the rehabilitation of the structure as he did last year when the same was damaged by typhoon.

Earlier, in his visit to Sitio Pagpagatpat, Barangay Bumagcat, Tayum to inspect the damages, he directed Tayum Mayor Placido Glenn Eduarte, Jr to declare the municipality in a state of calamity so that they can maximize the utilization of its calamity funds for the repair of the ARIA irrigation structure.

Another LGU that the governor advised to be declared under a state of calamity is Manabo, as he had seen for himself the extent of damages wrought by typhoon Gener especially to its cornfields. (JDP/MTBB-PIA CAR,Abra)
