Bush thanks Arroyo for Schilling rescue

  • US President George W. Bush personally thanked President Arroyo yesterday for the decisive actions she took in effecting the rescue of American hostage Jeffrey Schilling from his Abu Sayyaf captors.
  • In a letter to President Arroyo, President Bush said the action of the Philippine government during the seven-month crisis exemplifies the depth of the ties between the two countries.

Arroyo urges October 2002 deadline for peace talks

  • President Arroyo yesterday urged the CPP-NPA-NDF guerrillas to set October 2002 as deadline for the completion of peace talks which will start on April 27.
  • Government peace panel chairma Silvestre Bello III noted there are only three of four substantive issues left for negotiations, after the GRP and the NDF signed in 1998 the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law.

Dacer killed for knowledge about BW scandal

  • The Philippine National Police (PNP) said yesterday public relations man Salvador "Bubby" Dacer appeared to have been killed because of what he knew about the Best World (BW) Resources scandal that brought the near collapse of the Philippine capital market.
  • Police authorities will summon former PNP and PAOCTF Chief Panfilo Lacson Jr. and two of his top aides to explain suspects' claims that they were simply following orders when they abducted and killed Dacer and Corbito.

Ombudsman set to file amended plunder charge vs Estrada

  • Ombudsman Aniano Desierto will file today an amended complaint for plunder against Joseph Estrada to force the Sandiganbayan to immediately issue a warrant for his arrest.
  • Sandiganbayan Third Division Justice Anacleto Badoy said they are now in the process of determining the existence of probable cause in the plunder case.
