Roxas City turns vigilance into ordinance

Roxas City (31 October) -- The city government now has the legal weapon to prevent and control the entry or outbreak of avian influenza or bird flu to the seafood capital of the Philippines.

Since this capital city is a major point of entry to Capiz, the Avian Influenza Prevention and Control Ordinance passed by the city council last October 16 will also benefit the province.

The ordinance was proposed by the Office of the City Veterinarian headed by Dr. Dante Corros and was sponsored by Ho. Amador Anisco, Jr. and Hon. Gregorio Arcenas.

Although the province and this city remain free from bird flu, the city government worked out the measure spearheaded by the Office of the City Veterinarian to maintain the bird flu-free status.

Among others, the ordinance prohibits the sale or possession of any exotic poultry or wildlife and the sale of live chickens in the market during a bird flu threat.

Proponents of the measure said this is to ensure the health, safety and general welfare of Capiceņos and protect the local livestock and poultry and related industries.

The measure also calls for the creation of a city avian influenza task force which shall oversee the implementation of the provisions of the ordinance and other related activities.

The task force is chaired by City Mayor Vicente Bermejo with Dr. Corros and City Health Officer Dr. Amelita Robles as vice chairpersons.

It also enjoins community support to the efforts of the city government. (PIA) [top]
