PCSD spearheads coastal clean-up in Aparri, Cagayan
Aparri, Cagayan (4 November) -- Members of the Provincial Committee on Sustainable Development (PCSD) have initiated the conduct of coastal clean-up in this town being one of the hardest hit areas due to the series of typhoons in the past.
Aparri is the municipality 'where the river meets the sea' or the exit point of rivers from the mountains of Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya and traverses in the mighty Cagayan River along Isabela and Cagayan provinces.
Forester Robert Adap, Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer of Cagayan, said the waste materials that were thrown into the river banks from the upland tributaries of Cagayan River were carried away by the flashfloods during the typhoons and exited to this town.
Aside from this, there were so many debris along the coastal zones of the said municipality due to typhoon'Pepeng' and'Ramil' that hit the province.
"Cleaning the coastal zones of our province is very important considering that we have so many resources here that are sources of livelihood of our fellow Cagayanos," Adap said.
He also stressed that the coastal clean-up is one way of mitigating climate change and a way to show to the people the our coastal zones must be kept clean and protected.
Representatives of different agencies have joined the clean-up such as DepEd, DOLE, PIA, DENR, DILG, Process Luzon, PNP, and the employees of LGU-Aparri spearheaded by Mayor Ismael Tumaru.
Mayor Tumaru expressed his gratitude to the volunteers for joining the coastal clean-up in his town considering that Aparri is rich with natural resources which must be preserved and protected.
He also said that this town must maintain its cleanliness as one among the landmarks of the province which is usually the reference point of typhoons and known as the end point of the Philippine map in the north. (Oliver B./PIA 2) [top]
