Vigan City prepares for Nutrition Month observance

Vigan City (July 22) -- All is set for this year's celebration of the 35th National Nutrition Month this month of July here, according to Mayor Eva Marie Singson - Medina.

Mayor Medina said that this year's nutrition celebration will be highlighted with the following activities: nutrition quiz, poster slogan contest, mural painting, oratorical contest, cheer dance contest, speech choir contest, draw and tell contest, cooking contest and symposium on healthy lifestyle.

This year's nutrition program carries the theme: "Wastong Nutrisyon Kailangan, Lifestyle diseases iwasan."

"All activities will be simultaneously held on July 24, 2009 at the city hall and at the Vigan Culture and Trade Center (VCTC)," she said.

In a related development, it was reported that the malnourished incidence among children in the city had been tremendously reduced as compared to the result of monitoring last year.

"The city government of Vigan is actively implementing programs to attain its ultimate objectives of having 'zero' malnourish incident in the future," she said.

The lady mayor disclosed that the city government through Vigan City Nutrition Council is presently implementing its long-term nutrition program.

Among this activities include massive feeding and supplemental feeding among school children; bio-intensive gardening; training for agriculatural teachers; intensified information education campaign on the significance of nutrition and healthy lifestyle; regular evaluation on nutritional status of secondary, elementary school children and day care; strengthening of the barangay nutrition councils particularly in recording and action planning; conduct of mother's class for health lifestyles; educational field trips; operation K2; and the conduct of different searches on following: most number of rehabilitated malnourished children in the barangay, most outstanding Barangay Nutrition Schoolar, best in morning routine exercises in the elementary level, most nutri- functional school canteen and best in school garden.
