BUTUAN CITY (4 May) -- The National Council for the Welfare of Disabled Persons (NCWDP) in partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is set to gather all webmasters across the country to empower disabled persons through accessible Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in a workshop dubbed as “Webmasters’ Interface on Accessible ICT for Persons with Disabilities” on May 24-26 in Cebu City.
According to Catalina Fermin, NCWDP Executive Director, the activity aims to evaluate the accomplishments and the action plans submitted by more than 75 webmasters from NGOs, Public Offices and educational institutions trained from Tagaytay, Davao and Cebu City workshops on Accessible ICT last year.
The impact of the three workshops jointly launched by DSWD, NCWDP and CICT greatly inspired participating agencies to come up with “disabled-friendly” websites as a tool to generate IT-related work opportunities with and for persons with disabilities.
Fermin also said that NCWDP invited Leo Valdes, a Canadian-based fellow Filipino, and world renowned IT expert and consultant to the United Nations in the IT field as the resource person.
Fermin further said that participants in this workshop are expected to share their experiences in making their websites accessible for PWDs as well as give insights on the adoption of Philippine standards on Web Accessibility.
The workshop is also made possible through the Vision Office Support Services Limited (VOSSL), Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT), National Computer Center (NCC), Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability, Nova Foundation for Differently Abled Persons and the NCWDP Sub-Committee on ICT Resources for the Blind.
