Negros Oriental State University celebrates 82nd Founders Day
By Rachelle M. Nessia
Dumaguete City (27 November) -- The Negros Oriental State University here will celebrate its 82nd Founders Day celebration with the theme "NORSU: Industry and Hard Work for Productivity."
It is a 6-day celebration starting Saturday, November 28 to Thursday, December 3.
The founders day theme was suggested by NORSU President Henry A. Sojor during the faculty meeting in June this year. He said NORSU graduates are now recognized not only locally but also in the national and global arenas; and a number of graduates have been topnotchers in professional and licensure exams.
The highlight of the celebration is Hugyawan '09 – an entertainment that involves street dancing in the major city streets of Dumaguete and the showdown of each contingent's presentation at the NORSU Cultural Complex. Hugyawan is a Cebuano term for shouts of joy and merriment. For entertainment purposes, Hugyawan 09 has its own theme which is NORSU: in a hilarious encounter with world's superheroes.
The 14 contingents are from the two main campuses in Dumaguete City to its satellite campuses of Guihulngan, Bais, Siaton, Bayawan-Sta. Catalina, and the latest satellite campus of Mabinay. Hugyawan '09 is chaired by Dr. Peter T. Dayot. Overall chair for the founders day is Dr. Ma. Elsa Ilona Bulado, with Dr. Mary Evangeline F. Gajunera, co-chair.
In 1927, NORSU was then known as Negros Oriental Trade School (NOTS). In 1956, NOTS was changed to East Visayan School of Arts and Trades (EVSAT). In 1983, it became Central Visayas Polytechnic College (CVPC); and in 2004, it became NORSU, created through Republic Act 9299 on June 25, 2004. August 19, 2004 marked the day for the investiture of Dr. Henry A. Sojor as first president of NORSU. (PIA/rmn) [top]
