Families of victims of Maguindanao massacre to attend press congress

Manila (28 November) -- Some members of the families of mediamen who were victims of the Maguindanao massacre will be attending the 14th National Press Congress schedule from Dec. 10 to 12 at Subic Bay Freeport.

Mindanao Express publisher, Oscar Aznar, who is vice president of the Publishers Association of the Philippines, Inc. (PAPI) for Mindanao said some members of families of mediamen who were victims of the Maguindanao massacre will be attending the press congress in Subic .

Aznar said he has directed Cotabato Ngayon publisher Marina Lao, PAPI regional chairman for ARMM, to invite Mrs. Monette Salaysay, wife of the late Napoleon Salaysay publisher of the ClearView Gazette, a Cotabato based weekly, to attend the Subic media summit. Aznar also asked Mrs. Lao to also invite other families of victims to attend the press congress.

Aznar said PAPI is looking into the possibility of extending some assistance like, scholarships to children of the Salaysay and others.

Salaysay, a noted journalist who was also in broadcast journalism, was an active member of the media in promoting PAPI advocacy such as press freedom and culture.

Among the mediamen who died in the massacre aside from Salaysay are:

1) Maritess Cabertas, 2) Jimmy Cabillo, 3) Victor Nun(ez, 4) Ian Toblan, 5) Leah Dalmacia, 6) Gina Dela Cruz, 7) Joy Duhay, 8) Andy Teodoro, 9) Macmac Areola, 10) Bart Maravilla, 11) Henry Araneta, and 12) Bong Reblando. (PAPI) [top]
