by Maritess Beņas

Lagangilang, Abra (8 December) -- Operating troops of the of Charlie Company of the 41st Infantry Battalion led by 2Lt Wander Guway have discovered an abandoned encampment of the communist terrorists (CTs) along the Sequet River located within the boundary of Nueva Era, Ilocos Norte and Brgy. Nagaparan, Danglas, Abra last November 26.

LtC. Raul V. Bautista, battalion commander of the 41st IB of the Philippine Army said, the camp was discovery after the troops from 50IB based in Ilocos Sur encountered NPAs at Nueva Era on November 18, resulting to the death of two CTs and recovery of several high powered firearms.

One of the CTs killed was identified as Gerardo Bonggaoen aka Noel, 39 years old, and a native of Brgy. Dulao, Malibcong, Abra.

According to the residents, the CTs utilized this as their rendezvous area and usually, around 30 or more CT members were sighted taking rest in this camp. Said area is also their usual route from Ilocos Sur as well as Nueva Era, Ilocos Norte to any point in Abra.

The camp looked like it was abandoned for weeks already, but there is a communal farm planted to pineapple and other crops like vegetables and other more permanent crops.

1Lt Eduard Sia-ed, the civil military operations officer of the battalion said, the people in the locality have expressed their support to the anti-insurgency campaign of the government as they are already fed-up of the NPA propaganda because the community people feed the NPAs whenever they conduct meetings in their places and even extort money. The people are complaining about the difficulty of life, and the NPAs are an added burden for them to support in any manner as they simply can not get rid of them whenever they are around.
